The Samsung Galaxy View is a TV-Tablet hybrid device. It was announced in October 2015 and later released in November. It has gotten some rave reviews from buyers about its specifications and functions.
Display and design
This device has a TFT capacitive touch screen that is 18.4 inches and has 1080 by 1920 pixels. The body is 17.79 by 10.86 by 0.47 inches which is pretty sizeable for a portable device. The Samsung Galaxy View weighs 2.65 KG which is quite heavy for a device, especially one that is portable. It is therefore not as fun to carry around. It can, however, be carried in a standard bag pack or one of the briefcase-like packs that Samsung is selling. The device is only available in black and white.
The Samsung Galaxy View has GSM/ HSPA/ LTE network options. It also sports a nano-SIM, seeing as it can perform the same Android functions that a tablet can. The Samsung Galaxy View runs on Android Operating System, v5.1.1 Lollipop. To power the device, the Octa-core 1.6 GHz Cortes-A53 is the choice of CPU used. The battery life is pegged at 8-hour multimedia use and is a Li-Ion 5700 mAh battery that cannot be removed.
The Samsung Galaxy View also has an inbuilt stand/ handle. For the internal memory, the Galaxy View has 2GB RAM and a 32 and 64 GB option for the primary memory. It can however be expanded to 128 GB using a micro SD slipped into the slot provided.
The camera is nothing to write home about as it only has 2.1 MP, considerably low for a device of its caliber. It also does not have a secondary camera. These are some of the features that make the Galaxy View more of a portable TV than a tablet. It has Bluetooth, GPS and micro USB v2.0.
The Samsung Galaxy View allows the users to watch television on the big screen. The 1080 pixel screen is good for watching movies and TV as it is clear but this is not the same for reading a lot of text as it pixelates. Additionally, the stand/ handle works best for hard surfaces but does not support the device well on softer surfaces such as duvets. Its four-watt speakers that lie behind the hinge are not as reliable for sound and so the device is best used with Bluetooth speakers.
It is portable and thus makes watching television on the go easy. It has quick touch navigation but has a problem with scrolling so it is not as fun to use for gaming as it is to watch TV. One of the negative aspects about it is that it is not waterproof so should not be used near a pool or a large water body.
For a $600 price tag, the Samsung Galaxy View is not a necessary gadget. It may be fun to use as a portable television but is it worth that amount? It is the first of its kind and may even be referred to as belonging to new generation of devices.
